Sweetheart Turnip Cake 心心蘿蔔糕

What you will need

  • 1 white turnip (approx. 500g), grated
  • 250ml water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp dried shrimp, soaked and finely diced
  • 4-5 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and finely diced
  • 1 Chinese sausage, finely diced
  • 130g rice flour
  • 1 tbsp corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • Natural red food coloring

Let’s get cooking!

  1. Simmer the grated turnip and 1 cup of water in a large pan for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Scoop the cooked turnip into a large mixing bowl. Pour the remaining liquid from the pan into a measuring cup, and add water until you have 1 cup of liquid. Add it to the mixing bowl with the cooked turnip.
  3. Heat up 1 tablespoon of oil in your pan. Fry the shrimp, mushrooms, and sausage for 5 minutes.
  4. Add rice flour, cornstarch, salt, sugar, white pepper and red food colouring into the mixing bowl with the cooked turnip. Mix well until combined.
  5. Stir in the cooked shrimp, mushrooms and sausage. (If you prefer a softer texture you can add another 1/4 cup of boiling water to the batter). Leave it for 15 minutes to absorb the liquid.
  6. Spoon the batter into the heart shaped silicone mold (you can also use a loaf pan). Place the mold into a steamer with plenty of water and steam over medium-high heat for 50 minutes.
  7. Remove the pan from the steamer and let your turnip cake set for about 30 minutes. Once cooled, pull the sides away from the turnip cake and turn it upside down to release it from the mold.
  8. Pan-fry the turnip cake and enjoy!
